One Step at a Time
One Step at a Time is a touching story set in the mountainous rainforests of Asia, which tells of the relationship between a young boy from Thailand, Luk, and a baby elephant, named Mali.
When Mali accidentally steps on a landmine on the border of Thailand and Burma, what follows is a story of love, hope and courage as Luk supports Mali during her recovery. Jane Jolly's enthralling story is based on a real event, and introduces children to the devastation that landmines can cause, however, it is ultimately an uplifting story of compassion and friendship.
Sally Heinrich stunning illustrations were created using lino prints and watercolour inks, complemented by the use of intricate border designs. As a frequent visitor to Asia, Sally worked from photographic images of elephants and the environment to ensure the results looked as authentic as possible.
Storyteller Lucy Perry is former CEO at Sunrise Cambodia and brings a very special sensitivity to her reading.
