Discussion Questions
- How do you usually create your art? Do you have a favourite thing to draw with – pencils, sharpies, paint or on a computer?
- How would you describe your drawing or artwork to someone else? Is it realistic, fantastical or funny, sketchy, colourful, cartoony or something else?
- If you could draw like anyone, whose STYLE might you like to do?
- In the video, Jess said that the materials, or MEDIUM, she chooses can often make her draw in a certain way.
- What is your understanding of what an artwork MEDIUM is?
- Do you remember some of the examples of different mediums Jess gave?
- Why do you think Jess chose to use watercolour for her book ‘Reef’?
- Heidi said she likes to create minimal shapes with lots of texture, and characters with big, expressive eyes. Take a look at the covers of Heidi’s books ‘Baz and Benz’, ‘Floof’ and ‘I Just Ate My Friend’ (NB – the covers can be seen in Heidi’s video introduction. These books are also available via the related stories section of this page).
- What do you notice about the covers of these three books?
- Do they look like they were created by the same person?
- How would you describe the STYLE of this artwork?
- Jess told us that before she chooses a style to use in a book, she tries to work out the mood and tone of the text.
- What do you think she means by the ‘mood’ and ‘tone’ of a book?
- Can you think of any book examples where the art style perfectly matches the story's tone and mood?
- Jess and Heidi gave us some advice for finding our own illustration styles; they emphasised that a style can emerge by having fun, drawing lots, and experimenting.
