Working out what goes where
Working out what goes where in a story can sometimes be tricky. Luckily, there is a simple tool we can use to help shape our PLOT – no matter what kind of story we are writing! This lesson will show you how to structure your stories, and how to make your story events flow in an exciting, satisfying way.

Learning Intentions
1. Learning about the Three-Act Structure, and what happens in a story in each of the three parts.
2. Thinking about planning stories, and how the use The Three-Act Structure to develop a story plot.
3. Exploring descriptive language to develop a character’s world and emotions, and to add interesting detail to a plot.
SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1. Identified the three acts in the Three-Act Structure, and described what happens in each of these parts.
2. Used the Three-Act Structure to organise story ideas, and to develop a plot outline.
3. Used descriptive language in story writing.
Discussion Questions
- We all know stories need to have a beginning, middle and end. How would you describe what happens in each of these parts?
- Think about your favourite story, or a story you have read recently in class.
- What happens in the beginning?
- What happens in the middle?
- What happens at the end of that story?
- In the video, Mat described plot as your story events, shuffled into an interesting order. What do you think Mat means by an ‘interesting order of events’?
- Mat and Lili both talked about the Three-Act Structure. Do you remember what that is? How would you describe the Three-Act Structure?
