Lone Pine

Lightning flashes. Thunder booms. Wind tears at the branches of an old pine tree that stands alone in the grounds of the Australian War Memorial.

Pine cones lie scattered across the ground.

Based on a true story, Lone Pine is the incredibly moving story of how a simple gift of a pine cone from a soldier to his mother becomes a national symbol of remembrance.

So much more than an explanation of an historical event, this gentle story from authors Susie Brown and Margaret Warner is a meaningful and sensitive account of both a personal experience and a nation-defining event. It is a story that connects families, generations and a nation with the Lone Pine becoming a symbol of hope, pride, strength and remembrance of the battle of Gallipoli and Australia's fallen soldiers.

Sebastian Ciaffaglione's dramatic and emotive illustrations are wonderfully evocative. Storyteller Jan 'Yarn' Wositzky's genuine and humble reading is beautifully fitting.

Lest we forget.
