Behind the Books: Andrea Rowe on Audrey Skips

Children's author and Victoria's Library Ambassador Andrea Rowe introduces her picture book Audrey Skips, illustrated by Lisa Coutts. Andrea shares how a night time visit to Melbourne sparked the story of Audrey, the city's beloved Skipping Girl sign, who has been flickering and glittering above the rooftops for 90 years. As Audrey skips through the sleeping streets, she notices people struggling with hard times and soon finds her own light dimming too. It's a warm and hopeful story about community and kindness, about coming together when things get tough, and about the history and stories hidden in the landmarks all around us. Andrea also talks about what she hopes children will take away from the book, and how she used a skip rope rhyme from history to wind Audrey through the city streets.
