There's a particular comfort that falls over a classroom when a storyteller begins. Children love to be read to. They love being told a story or just sitting quietly with a soothing flow of the words of a well-told tale. A lively classroom can settle instantly and bring a feeling of togetherness that is hard to rival.

Storytellers have been doing this for as long as there have been children. The craft of it is one of the oldest teaching arts we have.

StoryBox Hub has set out to celebrate storytelling, and to honour kids by offering them the best. We value professional Australian storytellers telling stories the way stories are meant to be told.

What a teacher does with a story is their own wonderful journey. Some will start their week or day with one. Others will settle the class after lunchtime with a read-aloud. Some teachers let a First Nations' Story lead a beautiful conversation. Some come back to the same storyteller again and again because a class has taken a particular liking to someone recognisable in their world.

It's worth noting that a recent paper in Smart Learning Environments (Kucirkova et al., 2026) looked at what allows a resource to become part of how a school works over time – the setup it needs, the cost, the demands on teachers, the fit with school strategy. Storytelling sits comfortably against all four, and always has. It's why storytelling has stayed in classrooms while a great many other things have come and gone.
