Tony Armstrong grew up in rural NSW and is a proud Gamilaroi man. He played AFL for Adelaide, Collingwood and Sydney, where he played alongside one of the Aboriginal men who inspired him as a child, Adam Goodes. In 2019, Tony became the first Indigenous person to call live action Aussie Rules football on commercial radio. Tony joined the ABC in 2020, presenting sport on the ABC News channel, commentating for Grandstand AFL on ABC Sport and hosting the summer series of Offsiders and from 2021-2024, was the sports presenter for ABC News Breakfast.
His television credits extend beyond sports, including hosting Tony Armstrong’s Extra-Ordinary Things, Monday’s Experts, Great Australian Stuff, A Dog's World with Tony Armstrong and Eat the Invaders for the ABC. Tony has made regular appearances on The Weekly with Charlie Pickering, The Yearly, The Project, and Fox Footy. He‘s been a guest on several Play School specials and lends his voice to Mr Flip on ABC Kids Reef School. Tony also brought the character of Max to life in Oscar winner Adam Elliott’s feature film, Memoir of a Snail. In 2025, Tony took over the hosting duties for the Eurovision Song Contest on SBS alongside Courtney Act. His most recent project on the ABC, End Game, is a three-part investigative series tacking racism in sport.
Tony won the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent at the 2022 Logie Awards and the prestigious Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter at the 2023 Logie Awards and was nominated for a Gold Logie at the 2024 awards.
Tony is also a gifted writer and creator and an imaginative story-teller. His first children’s book, George the Wizard, was published in 2024 by Hachette Australia, followed by its sequel, Maggie the Dragon in 2025. In addition to this literary success, he is currently developing an exciting slate of television projects.
